ON EAGLES' WINGS

Dear Children,

This morning after Church, Papa visited a lady in hospital. I sat in the car and waited for him. It was warm and sunny.

Suddenly, in the sky above, at the end of the street I saw a small bird chasing an eagle. The eagle was many times larger but the small bird kept diving at it until it went away. I could not see what sort the small bird was -probably a peewee.

For the next 10 or 15 minutes I watched the eagle soar in circles up and up and up to the clouds. It slowly circled round and round, each time gaining height.

It was probably a young female wedge tail as it was light in colour.

·        The Wedge tailed eagle is the largest bird of prey in Australia. It lives in all parts of Australia.

·        A wedge tail eagle calls by whistling and loud shrill screams.

·        Wedge tails can carry 5kg and more of prey through the air.

·        The Eagle is one of the most powerful birds in the world. They are careful to avoid danger.

·        Eagles are very afraid of humans and rarely attack them, but an eagle may dive at people who come too close to its nest and may strike with its talons.
